(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 01, 2012 ) Lake Helen, FL -- People around the United States are becoming more worried about the severe West Nile outbreak that has affected hundreds of people, and left 41 people dead, thus far. According to health officials reports from earlier this week, there have been 1,118 cases of the virus, affecting residents of 38 states.
Reports also indicate that there has been West Nile activity of some sort, whether it be an infected bird or mosquito in 47 states. The only states without reported West Nile activity, as of yet, are Alaska, Hawaii and Vermont.
Dallas County, Texas is being hit particularly hard by the virus, for which there is no anti-virus or vaccine, and while officials are unclear on exactly why this is, some experts believe the mild winter, early summer and unseasonably hot temperatures be playing a role.
As people become more concerned about the virus throughout the country, many are doing their own research, keeping up with the news on reported cases, and studying medical health articles and medical health news to learn ways they can protect themselves and their family from the potentially deadly virus.
“This is scary for a lot of people to hear right now,” said Neil Maiuri, of the website medicalhealthreports.com. “Just a few weeks ago, a lot of people probably really weren’t aware of what West Nile is, or its implications, but now we’re hearing all of these reports about sicknesses and death as a result, and people are starting to sit up and take notice. There’s a lot of people that are now doing their research on how to protect themselves, and the necessary medical health care that is needed, and that’s a good thing, because the more knowledgeable people are, the less new cases will arise.”
Medicalhealthreports.com reported on a recent story from the San Angelo Standard Times, out of San Angelo, Texas. According to the story, while 80 percent of those people infected by West Nile demonstrate no symptoms, about 1 percent of those who become infected get the neuro-invasive type of the virus, which is potentially fatal. The story also pointed out the fact that there is no anti-virus or vaccine, and those people that seek medical treatment for the virus are given treatments to ease their symptoms, such as pain medication and hydration treatment.
“While there is no way to fully prevent the possibility of contracting the virus, it is important to know the facts and keep up with the news,” said Maiuri. “There are a lot of important tips and guidelines for avoiding mosquito bites, and this kind of information is your best defense against contracting the virus.”
