Specialist at ADHD.org Offers Tips for Parents of Students with ADHD, Heading into a New School Year

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 06, 2012 ) Fort Washington, Pennsylvania -- As another school begins, for many students it is a time of excitement and anticipation, but for students suffering from ADHD and ADD, the start of a new school year can mean fear, apprehension and anxiety and an increase in ADHD and ADD symptoms.

Domenic Greco, a blogger who is a retired ADHD specialist and Ph.D. holder, has created a blog dedicated to ADHD and ADD information, treatment and medication, adhdmeds.org.

Greco has compiled several key tips to help students with attention problems ease back into their school routine more smoothly, and to help parents aid in the transition.

“A new school year can be very difficult for these students with attention disorders,” said Greco. “It can cause a lot of stress and fear for the students, as well as the parents, and while there may not be a cure-all for the upset, there are ways parents and students can cope with the start of a new school year, despite an ADHD or ADD diagnosis.”

According to the blog, sudden changes can be the most difficult for children and young adults with attention disorders. Going from the slow and easy routine of the summer, quickly back into the routine of homework, tests and long hours of class can be very challenging, so it’s important to make the transition a slow change for your child. One effective way to do this is to start setting the bedtime and waking time the same as it will be during the school year, several weeks before school begins, says Greco. By giving the student time to adjust to the routine, your child will be more accustomed to waking up early, and will be more alert and focused while at school.

Another great way to get your student ready for another school year is by creating a list of expectations. A list that spells out exactly what you expect your child to accomplish is a good way to create a clear understanding between you and your child. The list can include areas from the previous school year that need improvement. Giving your child a list of expectations is a good way to help manage their stress and avoid having them be overwhelmed.

Greco also says that a schedule is of great importance for families with children who suffer from ADHD or ADD. This will help avoid stress and make each day more manageable. A schedule can include everything from when they will take their medications, to free time, including recess and after-school playtime. Looking at the schedule each night before bed will make their routine less overwhelming.

“A new school year doesn’t have to be a time of dread and worry for families of children with ADHD and ADD,” said Greco. “In addition to medication there are a number of ways parents can help their children manage their anxiety and create a successful school year that runs more smoothly.
