(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 08, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Recently carried out research reveals that people with kidney stones are more likely to face other kidney related problems in their life as well. Amongst these people, young women are more likely to face kidney problems.
This research was published in BMJ, an online journal, on the 30th of August and in no way suggests that kidney stones will always and most certainly result in other kidney problems as well. However, a partial association does seem to exist. Kidney stones have become increasingly common in recent years, but no solid evidence says that they will eventually lead to removal of kidneys or related failure.
To further observe these concepts American and Canadian researchers gathered sample data from around 3 million patients for nearly 11 years. These observations revealed that only one percent of them had at least one kidney stone removed and a total of 4% of these patients had later on suffered from chronic kidney disease. This number doesn’t seem to be very large, and neither does it indicate excessive levels of risk.
These findings highlight how patients with kidney stones had a very minute increase in the risk of facing other kidney related diseases and problems. This held true in particular for women and men under the age of 50.
The researchers concluded that this minute increase could be due to blockage and scarring after the kidney stones were removed. Marcello Tonelli, who is from the University of Alberta in Canada, declared according to doctorslounge.com, along with other co-workers that,
“Future research should not only focus on the trends and patterns of kidney related problems, but should devise a plan for their reduction and control. This could help the general population benefit greatly.”
