It was reported that nearly 18,000 patients with neck or joint pain, chronic, back or headaches were analyzed. The results of the research showed that the patients who received acupuncture felt greater reduction in their pain as compared to those who were treated with standard treatments for pain. The findings suggest that acupuncture is an effective and efficient way to treat chronic pain as compared to any other treatments.
A researcher from Oakland, Andrew Avins, supported the argument by agreeing that acupunture is the most effective treatment for chronic pain. “[The] Study gives some robust evidence that acupuncture seems to provide modest benefits over usual care for patients with diverse sources of chronic pain. At the end of the day, our patients seek our help to feel better, and lead longer and more enjoyable lives. Perhaps a more productive strategy at this point would be to provide whatever benefits we can for our patients, while we continue to explore more carefully all mechanisms of healing," Avins said, according to nbcnews.com.
Although the research shows that acupuncture provides relief for patients, some say the performance of a therapy is not the only way to measure the effectiveness of treatments. Some other factors like side effects and long term effects should also be taken into consideration as further research is required to draw a competitive conclusion.
